LEAGUE ANNOUNCEMENT: NJHL INTRODUCES TWO-FIGHT RULE

The National Junior Hockey League has introduced a significant adjustment to its fighting regulations for the 2026–27 season.

Under the updated rules, players will no longer be automatically ejected following their first fight.

The new two-fight rule will operate as follows:

  • First Fight: A player assessed a fighting major will receive a five-minute penalty. After serving the penalty, the player is eligible to return to the game.
  • Second Fight: A player assessed a second fighting major in the same game will automatically receive a game misconduct and be removed for the remainder of the contest.
  • Instigator Penalty: Any player assessed an instigator penalty in connection with a fight will be immediately ejected from the game. An instigator counts as two fights under the updated rule.

Previously, players were automatically removed from a game following their first fighting major.

This adjustment allows players to remain in the game following a first fight while maintaining consequences for repeat fighting and players who instigate altercations.

The NJHL will continue to review incidents and issue supplemental discipline when necessary.

Player safety, sportsmanship, and respect for officials remain priorities across the league.

LOOKING AHEAD TO NOVEMBER

With the first month complete, attention now shifts toward November as teams continue their push up the NJHL standings.

Edson will look to maintain its undefeated record, while Crowsnest aims to remain among the league leaders. Legal, Athabasca, Redwater, and Kainai will all be looking to build momentum as the schedule progresses.

As rivalries develop and teams continue to find their identity, fans can expect plenty more action throughout the coming month.
